OTTAWA, May 26 /CNW/ - 4 WING COLD LAKE - At approximately 2:20 p.m. today, a CF-18 from 416 Tactical Fighter Squadron at 4 Wing Cold Lake crashed during an Exercise MAPLE FLAG mission. The pilot is deceased.

Search and Rescue crews from 417 Squadron were immediately dispatched by CH-146 Griffon helicopter to the scene.

The accident occurred approximately 5 km north of Burnt Lake, AB, which is located on the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range (CLAWR).

The name of the pilot will not be released pending notification of next of kin.

The reason for the accident is unknown at this time but is being investigated. As soon as more details become available they will be provided.

A news conference will be held at 7 p.m. local time (9 p.m. EST) at Medley Terminal at CFB Cold Lake.
