That really depends on the base. Some bases are regarded by the local powers that be to be more valuable used for other things, or are even considered a nuisance. The closure of St Hubert was robustly supported by local Montreal-area politicians, as it was felt that the redevelopment would be of greater value.

My understanding is this is what happened to Kapyong Barracks. But instead it is now an urban First Nations reserve. I bet the neighbours are happy about that! I hope they build the biggest, gaudiest casino there between Vegas and Niagara Falls!

I’d close Meaford tomorrow and move the training centre to Petawawa. No reason to keep a base open so we can make our members move yet again. I’d do the same thing to Wainwright if it weren’t for the training area.

You actually don’t need a whole lot of space to run a DP1. If possible run them so they offset with the Bde’s training cycle. Or if that’s not doable, still close Meaford but move the school to Gagetown.

It’s not really the brigade that’s the problem (although in my opinion Petawawa’s infrastructure was never really upgraded enough when 1RCR moved from London). The bigger issue is that Special Operations units train a lot.

Petawawa might not currently have enough manoeuvre and range space to properly accommodate the needs of 2CMBG, CSOR and CSOTC. Adding a divisional training centre doesn’t seem possible.

Keep the real estate, keep a few commissionaires to unlock the gates as needed to use the training areas, but close the outsourced base operations and the training centre.

There's no accommodations or empty training buildings to hold DP1 and they're actively trying to take down old buildings to save money. You're not moving anything to Petawawa without a billion dollar infrastructure update, which wouldn't even address the rest of the archaic buildings there.

A decade ago the CAF did an infrastructure survey and it had the 2nd oldest average building age in the CAF behind Kingston which still operates 18th century forts.

I've gone there for a 2 week exercise from Kingston. Very much worth the road move for a relatively quiet training area during the week.

31&32 CBG actually have numbers to justify keeping it, though.

When the QOR and RHFC combined parade more soldiers on a Thursday night than all of 33CBG Infantry "Regiments" combined, you cater to their needs.

There’s no transient quarters ? Run it out of a tent city until course shacks can be built. Good god people we can actually built, move, and repurpose things. What is doesn’t have to be what will be.

Tent city in the winter isn't going to work that well. I'm all for finding funding solutions but this isn't a "fix it tomorrow" problem. Base closures need to be deliberate and coupled with planned infrastructure spending at the new home. Since we're not going to get new infra money any base closure should be a non starter. I could flippantly suggest we shut down Shilo and move it to Wainwright or vice versa but I think it creates more problems than money it saves.
