Allowances - Post Living Differential (PLD) [MERGED]

2023 rates Edmonton loses marginally or gains marginally across the board (from 1 to 3%, except Privates)

Allowances - Post Living Differential (PLD) [MERGED]

Yes. But I would argue they have been benefiting for years.

Allowances - Post Living Differential (PLD) [MERGED]

I created a spreadsheet that compares the gross paycheck for all NCMs (except SOF Operators and SARTECs), for all cities that received PLD or will now receive CAFHD. Come July 2023, everyone will have an increase in paycheck, albeit some will make very marginally more (MWO Spec 1 will make 1%...

Allowances - Post Living Differential (PLD) [MERGED]

COL (other than housing) is high everywhere. The normal benchmark is to pay less than 30% of the family gross income in housing costs. This is normally an indicator that you can live within your means. The CAFHD allows for that.

They already get relief from RHU price. They can’t pay more than 25% of their gross salary in rent.

The counter will start on 1 Jul 23. A note on that: going IR doesn’t reset the counter.

Allowances - Post Living Differential (PLD) [MERGED]

In an ideal world, yes. But in an ideal world, we’d all be making 30K a month. When given constraints (ie: no more money, just a new methodology), no. PLD was deeply flawed. Some benefited for years without an actual greater cost of living than the benchmark. Note that the CAFHD is meant to...

Allowances - Post Living Differential (PLD) [MERGED]

In a context of recession and financial hardship across the board, I believe it is a relevant benchmark.

Allowances - Post Living Differential (PLD) [MERGED]

How much has the general population had, on average, in terms of wage increase between 2021 and 2023? If it’s less than what we’re getting, the only optic that they will have is that we’re whining with our mouth full.

It may be a thing for Generals (4-Maple Leafs).

Allowances - Post Living Differential (PLD) [MERGED]

The intent of the CAFHD is to mitigate housing cost and provide an equivalent level of protection as renting a PMQ does. You can’t be charged more than 25% of your gross income for a PMQ. The HD is structured that way, based on the cost of an average 2 bedroom appartement in each location...

    Leave

Good for them. If we do this in our unit, there are essential things (like providing Aerospace Control) that don’t get done. I can’t afford to give these folks to double their allocation of leave. And if I can’t fo it for one group, I don’t do it for anyone.

    Leave

This goes both ways. It is NOT you work at least 8 hours unless we need you for more, in which case, you work more. Got the job done in 2 hrs? Go home. There are assumptions based in our pay, which includes 3% overtime for officers and 6% for NCMs. This is based on 20 days a month, 8...

    Leave

My take on short leave (other than religious/spiritual observance) is that you don’t ask for it: the CoC will recommend short leave to the CO, or the CO will give you short to reward people for exemplary work, for working unusually long hours, or to tend to family-related obligations (although I...

    I dislike RMC

Hmmm not true. Undergrad engineering taught me a discipline and work ethics that went a long way during pilot training. That discipline allowed me to focus on what was important and the work ethics to put the efforts when I needed to put them, regardless of what my social desires were. Also, my...

CMMA - replacing the CP140 Aurora

I don’t think anyone has issues with other platforms employing weapons. But I can help but roll my eyes when Navs (they were still Navs back then) suggested (and was insistent) that the CP-140 should be carrying AMRAAM.

I thought 3rd year was the most terrible one…. Fourth year was busy but fun and interesting.

    I dislike RMC

Sucking it up and writing it off as « part of the price » is part of the reasons the CAF is in the hurt locker now. If training is not relevant to a large group of people, we’re wasting time and effort on something that isn’t improving our capabilities.

    I dislike RMC

I can confidently say, after 17 years of flying aircraft for the CAF that it is indeed a fact.

    I dislike RMC

None of the Army stuff applies to being a (fighter) pilot. I am sorry. We do hard things. They are different than Army hard things. None of what I learned on BOTC or RMC (from the military component) is applicable to what I do today. I could have done without it and would have been fine.
